HGA takes a leading role at the annual AIA Conference on Architecture in San Francisco June 7–10.
We are honored to stand alongside some of the architecture and design industry’s top thought leaders—all who share the common goal of making meaningful progress through design.
This conference is where industry leaders gather to define the future, design it—and build it. And this is where we join our colleagues, clients, and community members to “explore what it means to design a better world now, together.”
HGA colleagues are presenting multiple learning sessions, participating in the AIA Large Firm Roundtable—and accepting four national AIA awards for design excellence and leadership.
From new insight on planning for net zero energy to advancing our culture through equity, we cover a range of topics influencing the national conversation.
Check out the HGA’s full presentation line-up below and watch for daily updates on LinkedIn.
We’re excited to connect with you at A’23!

Date: June 10 | Time: 4:00 PM PST
Many projects that integrate energy modeling are still falling far short of their building performance goals due to a lack of continuity in the analysis work. This session will investigate the common process gap that occurs in the “middle” phase of design, between early energy analysis and a final compliance model. Learn to develop a workflow that extends your own analysis work to fit the design team’s unique needs. Examine the functionality of existing tools and obstacles designers face and review a case study of one firm’s process as a precedent for implementation at a broader scale.
Program: Designing to Zero Energy in Cold Climates: Process and Solutions
Speakers:

Marc L’Italien,

Alexander Harris,
Senior Project Manager[/su_column][/su_row]
Date: June 10 | Time: 11:30 AM PST
Projects:
Westwood Hills Nature Center
Forest Edge Elementary
A project’s energy use in a cold climate can look quite a bit different from the same project in a milder climate. This challenge demands that the project team have a deep understanding of which strategies will move the needle on energy use, to optimize the design while keeping the project on budget. Using process as the common thread, two case study projects designed and built in Minnesota and Wisconsin (Westwood Hills Nature Center and Forest Edge Elementary) will demonstrate replicable strategies for how an informed and integrated process was applied to achieve net-zero energy design solutions in northern climates.
