HGA’s Pro-Bono Community Design Workshop Call for Participants

Helping to further a nonprofit’s vision through design.

HGA’s Minneapolis office is accepting applications for its 7th Annual Design Workshop happening on October 14, 2022. This free-of-charge, day-long design charrette will provide an opportunity for nonprofit community groups (serving Minnesotans) to meet with a team of design professionals matched to their organization’s specific needs. The workshop will help groups co-create solutions to achieve actionable results for their projects.

Applications will be accepted through Friday, September 16. Eligibility is limited to organizations with documented nonprofit status or fiscally sponsored nonprofit organizations, with priority given to those in the metro area. Details for the submission and selection process can be found here.

Some past workshop participants have included:

  • Camp One Heartland
  • Center for Irish Music
  • Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery
  • Keystone Community Services
  • East Metro Civic Alliance
  • Amherst H. Wilder Foundation
  • Leonardo’s Basement
  • Hired

Some examples of services HGA may be able to provide during this event:

  • Conceptual floor plans and programming
  • Imagery and renderings for a fundraising campaign
  • Facility code and accessibility assessment
  • Construction project cost estimating
  • Resiliency & sustainability strategy development
  • Master planning & landscape design
  • Engineering scope or assessments
  • Environmental graphics/branding

For the second year in a row, HGA is inviting students from Dunwoody’s chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMAS) to participate in this pro bono event while also gaining valuable practical experience before entering their chosen career field.

This grassroots, employee-initiated effort to enhance the social impact of HGA’s work started in 2015 and has led to close collaboration with local organizations. HGA’s Community Action Program consists of four primary programs: Days of Service, Pro Bono Design Services, Design Workshops, and Outreach.

The true power of the Design Workshop was evident from the start — giving organizations access to professional design expertise, letting them know what is possible. Sometimes organizations need help refining their programmatical needs, before proceeding to design. Oftentimes, a successful capital campaign hinges on quality renderings that can be shown to potential donors. It is in these ways that the value of the Design Workshop will extend far beyond the day itself.

Inspired by the early work of HGA’s founders in education and the arts, and propelled by current employees’ commitment to holistic design and civic engagement, HGA invests time, resources, and expertise to create positive local impact. It’s not just corporate responsibility: it’s human responsibility.
