HGA Signs COP26 Communiqué Committing to Reduced Carbon Emissions
Leading building industry groups and firms from around the world, including HGA, are committing to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5oC target, and are challenging governments to do the same through the 1.5oC COP26 Communiqué. HGA believes in challenging ourselves and our industry. Integrating sustainable design into our project work is part of our strategic plan. HGA’s high performing projects are evidence that we have the knowledge and tools to solve the climate challenge. The projects below are a few examples showcasing our commitment to designing a sustainable future.
Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center – Margaret A. Cargill Lodge
Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center is a captivating place in northern Minnesota that draws upon the elegance of nature’s design as a powerful teacher—particularly in teaching young children and teenagers. The center’s mission is to create memories that change people and their behavior—as they interact with wildlife and the environment.
A deeply transformative project, the center aims to create memories that change people and their behavior, influencing home, school and community, and the next generation. The new living/learning facilities embody nature’s teaching power and create an inspiring home away from home living experience that is both physically and emotionally satisfying. The building is an integral part of the environmental learning process with visible, interactive sustainability features that help change attitudes and behaviors. The MAC Lodge is seeking Living Building Challenge Certification and will be the first project in the state of Minnesota and the 30th worldwide to accomplish this achievement.

Westwood Hills Nature Center (WHNC) is a 160-acre nature park featuring prairie, forest and marsh areas, with trails and an educational center. WHNC sought to replace their small, aging facility with a new building whose overarching purpose and vision is connecting people to nature. HGA’s site design expands an existing specimen prairie, creates an outdoor classroom space on the site of the old building, and provides expanded parking for visitors to the new facility. The building forms an experiential and informational threshold to the site. Together, the architectural and site design serve to reinforce visitors’ connection to their landscape. WHNC is pursuing Zero Net Energy Certification with ILFI.

In response to a growing student population and capacity challenges, the District constructed a fourth elementary school, Forest Edge Elementary School, to serve its students and flourishing community. The new two-story, K-6 school is the first net zero school in Wisconsin. Reflecting this progressive commitment of the District, the school will be an innovative, sustainable building that sets a precedent for schools of the future.
