HGA Presents Latest Research at EDRA53

We are honored to share the podium at EDRA53 in Greenville, South Carolina, this June, where we will present seven programs at the design industry’s leading research forum.

The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) gathers top designers, researchers, and academics across the nation—and globe—to highlight research that improves the relationship between people, the built environment, and natural eco-systems. While our presentations reflect diverse strategies, our goal is the same—improve the user experience for our clients and their communities.

The sessions include:

Behind the Curtain: The Latest in Practice-Based Research, Year Two

At EDRA52 last year, a panel of researchers glimpsed “behind the curtain” of how their companies conduct design research. As a continuation, this year’s panel recognizes the varied approaches to research in practice and considers how to improve efforts. More than a dozen researchers will lead three mini-workshops focusing on “pre- and post-occupancy evaluation,” “partnership models between academia and practice,” and “translating research into practice.”

Speaker: Renae Rich (HGA) | Date and Time: June 1, 2022 | 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.

Development of a Comprehensive Occupancy Evaluation Program for Healthcare Design

This presentation focuses on the development of a holistic occupancy evaluation program for healthcare settings, discusses a framework for protocol and tool development that engages design practitioners, reviews opportunities for standardization among health facility types, demonstrates data analyses on a meta-analyses scale, and highlights a data-management system.

Speaker: Kara Freihoefer (HGA) | Date and Time: June 1 | 9:10 A.M. – 9:30 A.M.

Understanding and Engaging Diverse User Groups in Higher Education Occupancy Evaluation

Renae Rich and Oshana Reich of HGA examine findings from an exploratory study that evaluated and compared the user experience across different higher education facility types.

Speakers: Renae Rich (HGA), Oshana Reich (HGA) | Date and Time: June 1, 2022 | 12:00 P.M. – 12:15 P.M.

The Impact of Design Decisions in a Cancer Infusion Center: Comparing Results from a Pre- and Post-Occupancy Evaluation

Cancer infusion centers are among the least studied healthcare environments. To address that gap, this study evaluates caregiver workflows and staff and patient satisfaction in a new cancer infusion center and compares findings to results from a pre-occupancy evaluation conducted in 2018.

Speakers: Mahshid Jalalian (HGA), Kara Freihoefer (HGA) | Date and Time: June 2, 2022 | 2:45 P.M. – 3:00 P.M.

A Mixed-Method Approach to Understanding User Experiences in the Built Environment: Case Study of an Art Center

HGA experts offer insights into a mixed-method evaluation of the visitor experience at an art museum in Minneapolis. The study specifically examined key touchpoints in a first-time visitor’s experience that support or hinder a sense of welcome, inclusion, and confidence in wayfinding and orientation.

Speakers: Mahshid Jalalian (HGA), Ada Mestad (HGA), Oshana Reich (HGA), Jonathan Bartling (HGA), David Goldstein (Walker) | Date and time: June 2, 2022 | 3:15 P.M. – 3:30 P.M.

Place, Meaning and Social Identity: Mapping Significant Places on University Campuses

This panel of research experts will explore the experiences of students from different racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientations, and other identities attribute to physical place on campuses.

Speakers: Mahshid Jalalian (HGA), Brian Schermer (UW Milwaukee) | Date and Time: June 2 | 4:05 P.M. – 4:20 P.M.

Implications of a Flexible Work Model on Corporate Design

This session focuses on the pandemic’s impact on workplace strategy. Kara Freihoefer and Sarah Berseth review results of a mixed-method research study that evaluated the employee experience in a hybrid work environment. The findings helped shape the firm’s flexible work policy and inform the office redesign.

Speakers: Kara Freihoefer (HGA), Sarah Berseth (HGA) | Date and Time: June 2 | 1:00 P.M. – 1:15 P.M.
