At the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), curator Michelle Joan Wilkinson is working to collect archives of black architects. Architects represented in the collection include Philip G. Freelon, Norma Merrick Sklarek, and Harold Williams, a co-founder of NOMA. Wilkinson will highlight historic documents in Williams’ archive related to NOMA’s founding. She will walk attendees through the museum’s collecting process, whether working with individuals still in practice or with family members caring for materials passed down to them. Finally, Wilkinson will share resources and tips for preserving the architectural treasures in your possession.
HGA Design Principal Peter D. Cook, AIA NOMA is the great grandnephew of the renowned architect and designer, Julian F. Abele, and the grandson of Howard University Deputy Campus Architect, Julian Abele Cook, Sr. Peter will share his own experiences working closely with NMAAHC to identify drawings, paintings, and artifacts of both Abele and Cook—along with his own drawings—for donation to the museum.
