National Arts Expertise & Regional Presence
HGA’s arts and cultural practice group combines years of experience with their passion for the arts to design beautiful, sustainable, and equitable environments. Over the past six decades, we have developed a national reputation for designing extraordinary cultural facilities that artfully balance form with function. Our team has also had the privilege of designing some of the region’s most prominent cultural facilities including Capital One Hall in Tysons, the new Northern Virginia Science Center in Loudoun County, and multiple memorial projects at Monticello.
Regional Projects
National Projects
University of Mary Washington Performing Arts Center
Transparency is one of the main themes and goals of the project. Not only the performance space but the actual construction embodies transparent and delivers visibility to the hands-on learning activities and practices through full-height home windows. The brand new theatre will be a standout and functional cultural gateway to campus on the nook of William Avenue and Sunken Street. The new theatre facility will include: flexible proscenium theatre, stage, black box theatre, scene shop, costume shop, two rehearsal studios, tech booth, box office, concession space, and support spaces.
Northern Virginia Science Center
This project brings together the Children’s Science Center and the Science Museum of Virginia to create a new collaborative science museum to serve Northern Virginia. It is located in the Kincora mixed-use development in Loudoun County, on a sloping site facing the Broad Run natural area. The 65,000 SF interactive museum will be built on a STEM-based education platform which will feature interactive exhibits, re-framing different aspects of science including medicine waterworks, space exploration, metropolis, technology, and a living garden.
Fairfax County Monument Drive Parking Structure
*AIA Northern Virginia Merit Award 2025* Longtime client Fairfax County has a commitment to design excellence and sustainability. We are privileged to be leading the design of their first GBCI ParkSmart parking garage. Product of the county master plan, this innovative multi-modal facility is the first to accommodate a ground floor “Slug” ride share transfer station and supports eight levels of parking (820 spaces) topped by full photo voltaic array. A single-story, tensile fabric pavilion covers an eight-bay bus terminal.
