Marcus Thorne Joins HGA as Senior Medical Planner

HGA welcomes Marcus Thorne, AAIAS, CHD, as Associate Vice President and Senior Medical Planner in the San Diego office. He will add expertise to the office’s growing Healthcare practice serving top-rated healthcare systems throughout southern California. 

“Working in healthcare design has been a very rewarding experience as I have collaborated with some of the largest healthcare systems in the country to envision facilities that increase patient healing and wellbeing, staff efficiencies, and bring innovative services to communities,” Thorne said. “HGA is an industry leader in healthcare design. I’m excited to contribute to the ongoing success of the firm.” 

Thorne has more than 30 years of healthcare planning and design experience nationally and internationally. His work includes comprehensive replacement hospitals, academic medical centers, and outpatient specialty clinics. Throughout his career, he has led integrated team processes through all phases of development, from master planning to design, implementation, and construction. He has added expertise in evidence-based design and sustainable design.  

He has led major projects for such clients as the U.S. Navy Camp Pendleton Replacement Hospital; Hoag Campus Expansion in Irvine, California; Bienvivir All-Inclusive Senior Health in El Paso, Texas; Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System in Redding, California; and Scripps Health in San Diego, among others. 

Before joining HGA, Thorne held medical planning and design leadership positions with several national architecture firms in California and Texas. He is a member of the Center for Health Design, Associate member of the American Institute of Architects, and has a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington.
