David Wilson, AIA, of HGA has won the 2023 National AIA Young Architects Award, recognizing his design leadership early in his career.
Wilson is a project designer specializing in arts, community, and education work. He has contributed to the design success of several recent award-winning projects, including Countryside Community Church, which won the 2023 International Religious Art and Architecture Award, and Marlboro Music Reich Hall, which won the 2023 National AIA Architecture Award.
These projects, as with others, reflect Wilson’s commitment to the ideals of architecture as a source of social good and environmental responsibility. Marlboro Reich Hall integrates sustainable technologies, materials and plantings to create a bucolic retreat that inspires great music within the natural setting of the Green Mountains of Vermont. Countryside Community Church honors the Christian tradition through iconic design while reaching out to an adjacent temple and mosque on a shared campus in Omaha—an architectural symbol of the common thread between the three Abrahamic faiths.
Other works-in-progress include Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum in Wyoming, and Spokane Falls Community College Fine and Applied Arts Building in Washington.
“David is a unique talent in the architectural community,” said Joan M. Soranno, FAIA, Design Principal with HGA, who nominated Wilson for the award. “Whereas most architects are closely aligned with either design, project leadership, or technical sides of architecture, David excels at all three. At the core of David’s wide‐ranging talents is a commitment to deeply serving the current and future needs of a given community through whatever design, service, or leadership necessary.”
Wilson has held several leadership roles with the AIA. He also won the prestigious Ralph Rapson Traveling Fellowship, where his passion for sustainability is extending to studying the connections between nature and architecture in Japan.
The annual AIA Young Architects Award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the architecture profession, including promoting environmental advocacy, increasing access to great design, and mentoring future architects.
