HGA is proud to announce that ThedaCare Medical Center’s Orthopedic, Spine, and Pain (OSP) in Appleton, Wisconsin has been honored with the 2024 IIDA Healthcare Design Award in the Community Hospitals category. The award recognizes innovative healthcare design, highlighting excellence and originality across 14 categories within ambulatory, hospital, extended care, and assisted living facilities.

Located within the park-like Encircle Campus, OSP is the third building on the site, joining ThedaCare’s Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) and Regional Cancer Center. This state-of-the-art orthopedic center of excellence provides surgery, rehab, clinic, and inpatient services under one roof, offering patients a seamless healthcare experience.

“Working with ThedaCare throughout the years has been very rewarding – they trust and value the ideas HGA brings, allowing us to create spaces that deliver exceptional healthcare experiences with the hospitality-focused brand we crafted together,” said Kate Bautista, senior interior designer at HGA.

HGA collaborated with ThedaCare and Hplex, developer and owner’s representative, to design a facility that blends with the existing campus while creating a distinct identity for OSP. Reflecting ThedaCare’s patient-centric brand, OSP’s vibrant material palette and hospitality-inspired design set it apart in the competitive elective surgery market.

The design elevates the patient experience with rich, bright colors bringing a sense of energy and encouragement to patients during their healing process. Thoughtful touches, including decorative lighting, nature-inspired finishes, and modern furnishings. High-end materials like laminated gold mesh glass and specialty wallcoverings provide both aesthetic appeal and functionality, ensuring privacy and durability. Art and furniture, including sun-themed pieces, add warmth and character, appealing to patients of all ages.

Designed with patients in mind, OSP focuses on creating a positive and memorable experience at every step. From easy access for mobility-limited patients to intuitive wayfinding and self-service kiosks, the facility offers comfort and convenience for all.

HGA previously won the IIDA Healthcare Design Award for Cedars –Sinai Guerin Children’s (2023) in Los Angeles, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center (2022) in Ohio, St. Elizabeth Healthcare Cancer Center (2021) in Kentucky, CentraCare Health – Long Prairie (2019) in Minnesota, and the Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation Molecular Imaging Center (2018) at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
