STAAT MOD Critical Care Units Receive Honorable Mentions in Fast Company’s 2020 Innovation by Design Awards

HGA’s design of STAAT MOD critical care units was honored in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards for 2020 in the Health and Spaces & Places categories.

The awards, found in the October/November 2020 issue of Fast Company, recognize people, teams, and companies solving problems through design. One of the most sought-after design awards in the industry, Innovation by Design is the only competition to honor creative work at the intersection of design, business, and innovation.

HGA designed and The Boldt Company fabricated the STAAT MOD™ critical care units to address the safety of patients and healthcare workers affected by COVID-19.

Drawing upon a collaborative and committed team of over 80 people working remotely and virtually, HGA and The Boldt Company were able to rapidly design, prototype and model a modular and prefabricated facility solution. Experts, such as critical care nurses trained in COVID-19 protocols, hospital environment specialists in infection control and lean process engineers tested the product in virtual reality simulation. The quality of the environment produced by the STAAT MOD design directly impacts the quality of care and outcome for the patient.

“This was a mission, not a project,” said Kurt Spiering, Principal and Healthcare Market Sector Leader at HGA. He continued, “STAAT MODs were born out of an urgent need for high quality care — delivered quickly. The solution continues to evolve to allow hospital systems with inadequate facilities to meet surge demand, maintain and provide flexible service and minimize disruption to care.”

In May 2020, Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center became the first hospital in the nation to install STAAT MOD modular units.

“We need innovative design more than ever, and the 2020 honorees have brought creativity, inventiveness, and humanity to address some of the world’s most pressing problems, including the global pandemic, racial injustice, and economic inequality. Together these entries offer a glimpse into a future that is more inclusive, more accessible, and more just,” said Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company.
