Wayzata Community Sailing Center

Launching Legacy in Wayzata

As an accredited sailing school, the Wayzata Community Sailing Center’s mission is to increase access to the environment through sailing education while offering programs for all ages and abilities including adaptive and outreach-oriented experiences. Throughout the year they offer programs on sailing education and ecological awareness that incorporate educational initiatives such as the STEM system (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).

The 3,500 SF boathouse is located on Lake Minnetonka, within a residential neighborhood near Wayzata’s charming downtown. It replaces a cramped, deteriorating old structure that was not accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Primarily serving as an open classroom, the ecofriendly new building will also include office space, upgraded facilities, and a large storage and boat maintenance garage.

The design for Wayzata Community Sailing Center was created in collaboration with a highly involved client that wanted a flexible classroom space with direct connection to outdoor teaching and staging areas and a continual focus back on the lake. The scale, proportions, and material selections for the center were thoughtfully designed to respect the vernacular of the surrounding neighborhood.
