UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh envisioned a dedicated Heart Institute, one that could advance their leading-edge care in pediatric cardiology. To bring this vision to life, HGA designed a dynamic three-story addition meticulously situated atop an existing parking garage on the hospital’s campus.

The new 50,000 SF Heart Institute creates a vibrant and uplifting identity for advanced medical treatment and technology. The universal layout of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory fosters a standard and flexible workflow to accommodate the diverse needs of care teams while expanding the breadth of care available to patients. Relocation of existing Cath Labs and the introduction of a new Cath lab connected to a Cardiac MRI, creating a state-of-the-art hybrid procedural space. In addition, inpatient and outpatient procedural rooms, along with private prep and recovery areas, have been carefully planned to optimize care through efficiency and well-being of young patients. Each design element reinforces a patient-centered approach to pediatric cardiac treatment.

As part of HGA’s inclusive design process, Virtual Reality technology was leveraged throughout the design phase, allowing the clinical team to virtually experience and test the spaces. This innovative approach enabled healthcare professionals to “walk the space” to provide valuable insights into functionality and user experience, ensuring a practical and patient-centered design.

The Heart Institute’s vibrant design is more than just functional – it’s inspiring. Bright colors, playful motifs, and custom environmental graphics create an engaging space that aligns with the hospital’s overall aesthetic while offering a fresh, cheerful feel. Lively hues, soothing lighting, and age-appropriate furnishings all contribute to an atmosphere that aids healing and promotes well-being.

The result is a Heart Institute that not only houses cutting-edge clinical spaces but also embodies a compassionate environment.
