University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Student Union
From Challenge to Champion
After students voted to reject a new $250M student union, UW-Milwaukee sought to update an aging, confusing, and unwelcoming union with a fraction of the funds at a project cost of only $40 million.
The existing union faced many challenges: a main level where circulation paths required multiple zig-zag turns in order to walk through the building; a dark almost windowless building; a chaotic layout of spaces that developed with four building renovations; a lack of vibrant engaging social and study spaces for students; and an inadequate budget.
HGA managed a robust design process that valued stakeholder input to prioritize budget in ways that would have the most impact on students, faculty, and organizations using the space. Through project “value meals,” stakeholders were able to understand how project components would impact both the budget and success criteria. This exercise allowed the co-creation of spaces that represented stakeholder values. Students wanted the space to show pride and identity, be safe and functional, include technology, and be more open and inviting.
The newly renovated union brings new experiences and a new look to the 350,000-square-foot building at the heart of campus. In describing the transformation, project leaders use words like vistas, natural light, openness, comfort, and collaboration.
