The Basilica of St. Mary
A Defining Icon of Minneapolis Sacred Spaces
HGA brought together nationally recognized designers, engineers, planners, and technical consultants to develop a 50-year master plan and lead the restoration of the Basilica of Saint Mary—the first church in the United States to be designated a basilica. A defining icon of the Minneapolis skyline, our planning approach combined blue sky thinking with technical expertise to unite the Basilica’s mission with a long-range vision for a sustainable, more inclusive environment. Inspired by an ethos of openness and curiosity, the team envisioned spaces that could activate the mind, engage the heart, touch the soul, and invite new ways of seeing. Working side-by-side with Basilica leadership, HGA explored thematic ideas for their potential to engage this diverse congregation—across background, culture, belief, and discipline.
In anticipation of the centennial celebration of its Basilica designation, the church is undergoing a transformative restoration led by HGA. The first phase of implementation, exterior masonry repair and copper roof replacement, is currently underway. Craftwork to restore the dignity and splendor of the historic interior has also begun, including repair of water-damaged ornamental plaster, restoration of decorative paint finishes, stone cleaning, and stained-glass window repair. Lighting upgrades, a new AV system, provisions for accessibility, pew refurbishment and wood floor replacement, will ensure a warm, welcoming inclusive experience.
