State of California, Department of General Services, Office Buildings 8 and 9
Green Renovations and Additions for Government Buildings
HGA completed renovations for the State of California, Department of General Services on two California State Office Building for identical twin towers, Buildings 8 & 9. The towers were originally built in 1967, standing 18 stories and comprising of 250,000 SF. At the time, they were the tallest and largest office buildings in Sacramento.
Renovation of these two 18 floor towers, including 540,000 SF of office space for the State of California Department of Social Services (DSS), included implementation of new mechanical, electrical and telecommunications systems, structural upgrades addressing seismic consideration, overall building upgrades meeting current code requirements and minor repairs to exterior shell.
A new 12,000 SF addition provides a central secured lobby and checkpoint to serve both buildings, second level walkway connecting OB 8 and OB 9 and a child care facility. Plaza renovation entailed the addition of green space within the hardscape area and development of private play areas dedicated to the child care program.
Goals for this project included meeting or exceeding all appropriate California Tier 1, Tier 2, and Title 24 design criteria and achieving a Silver Rating for LEED-EB (Leadership in energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings) through the United States Green Building Council. The team met these goals by incorporating a number of green elements such as energy savings through efficient use of sunlight, recycling of building materials, and the creation of an atrium to link the two buildings together.
