St. Camillus Independent Living

One Cohesive Family

HGA collaborated with St. Camillus to expand and renovate their senior campus in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, creating a cohesive design that enhances their reputation as a nationally recognized Life Plan Community. Offering independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and hospice care, St. Camillus prioritizes quality and choice to help residents achieve their life goals.

The new Independent Living Tower reflects St. Camillus’s core ideals—wellness, spirituality, fine arts, and culinary excellence—ensuring a vibrant lifestyle for residents. With an expanded commercial kitchen, multiple dining venues, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a theater, and a thoughtfully designed chapel, the tower fosters engagement and connection. The Revitalize Wellness Center features a pool, whirlpool, golf simulator, therapy center, and health education classroom, while flexible arts spaces accommodate galleries, performances, and lectures. The chapel, a focal point of the design, incorporates preserved stained glass, antique stations of the cross, and historical monument stones to honor St. Camillus’s heritage.

HGA designed the 15-story, 168-unit Independent Living Tower to feel both like a destination and a home. Thoughtfully integrated community spaces encourage movement and socialization, with the wellness center opening onto an outdoor terrace with a putting green and walking paths. Engagement-driven design choices were shaped by resident input, preserving cherished features while modernizing gathering spaces. Structurally, the post-tension tower integrates below-grade parking, an efficient lateral force-resisting system, and insulated structural balcony components for year-round comfort.

Following the new tower’s completion, HGA renovated San Camillo, the original independent living facility, to unify the campus. The renovation focused on enhancing dining, improving circulation, and upgrading lifestyle amenities. A larger, centralized kitchen now serves both residences, supporting multiple dining options. Widened ramps, reconfigured stairs, and leveled flooring increase accessibility and reduce falls. Renovated gathering spaces, including a casual café, convenience store, salon, and chapel, ensure a cohesive campus identity.

Through extensive resident engagement and a focus on community, HGA’s design reinforces St. Camillus’s mission of fostering connection, faith, and a fulfilling lifestyle. The result is a high-end, amenity-rich residence that respects the past while embracing the future.
