Master Plan & Hospital Redevelopment
Destination Outpatient Center
An urban infill project on the Medical School campus, the SSM Saint Louis University Hospital replacement hospital is a catalyst for redevelopment of the southwest end of a central business district. HGA is the planning and design architect for the $550 million total project cost for the replacement academic medical center in downtown Saint Louis. The replacement includes a 300-bed replacement hospital, ambulatory care center, a renovated historic landmark as a faculty office building, retail, and related parking. Future development includes research buildings, student /faculty housing, and a quadrangle to reinforce the live, work, and play aspects of the master plan. The replacement medical center achieves the healing and academic missions of the institutions who will together deliver world-class healthcare, outstanding patient experiences and outcomes.
Gathering insight for the design of the project started with the Lean 3P sessions to validate the space program and operational processes planned for the new facility. Through these sessions the importance of having necessary space for rounding within the patient unit without disturbing normal patient care flow was developed as critical to quality for the inpatient units. Design responded to this insight through the use of rounding alcoves outside of the patient rooms adjacent to decentralized charting stations, allowing the nurses to be part of rounding discussions as needed. Also part of the inpatient replacement is a universal platform which serves procedural and short stay patients for surgical services, endoscopy, and cardiology, improving efficiencies through increased utilization and collaboration.
