Renaissance Tower Renovation

Located in downtown Sacramento, the 28-floor RMR Tower was once the tallest building in the city. With almost no upgrades since it was built in 1989, we recently worked with the client to renovate the tower’s main lobby and common area, as well as expand the outdoor patio. The upgrades are a welcome addition to the buzzing K Street in Downtown Sac.

The client hoped to create a space that would attract both the public and new tenants to the building. The goal became more than just upgrading the space but activating it. With original touches of Art Deco-inspired design, we put together concept of a timeless lobby space where people would want to spend time.

What had once been a dark, uninviting space was transformed into a light and bright lobby to welcome the public and building tenants alike through several significant features. First, lighting was an important driver for the project, and all of the original fixtures were replaced with modern elements. These new fixtures flood the space with light while adding whimsical touches to the space. Secondly, a large green wall of preserved plants brings a biophilic element to the lobby through soft greenery that requires minimal maintenance from the building staff. Finally, new and comfortable seating options offer visitors the change to linger and provide an inviting space for tenants to meet and engage with one another outside of their offices.

We are currently working on a design for a state-of-the-art amenity, including a conference and fitness center adjacent to the lobby. Additionally, the designers wanted to incorporate “Sacramento” into the design in some way and invited two local artists to create pieces for the lobby. The first is a large wall mural featuring abstract images of plants native to the Sacramento area. The second is an installation in the elevator lobby that incorporates paper sourced from all over the world.
