Adapting a Historic Cinema into a Modern Office
The Red River office is designed for the fast-changing workstyles, aesthetically expressing the energy of the software-development firm while providing flexibility for on-site and mobile workforce.
Located in the century-old Helvetia Theatre, an adaptive mixed-use redevelopment with street-level commercial space and second-level apartment expansion along the R Street Corridor’s live, work, play options in midtown Sacramento, Red River adds to the neighborhood’s urban energy with its expansive windows that visually connect with the streetscape.
Inside the office integrates the building’s existing historic features—brick walls, exposed 15-foot-high concrete ceilings, concrete columns, and newer industrial-style windows—into a modern workplace. The open plan features a mix of individual workstations, shared hoteling table, collaborative spaces, commons areas, conference room, and a Technology Innovation Center at the front, which opens to an outdoor patio and events space.
Throughout, a vibrant mix of earth tones, angled and triangular shapes, patterned carpet, and contrasting materials project a sense of energy and fun—reflective of Red River’s entrepreneurial culture. Angled workstations add visual interest from the standard straight-edge desktop, sawtooth-patterned wood paneling in the reception area aesthetically integrates with the existing brick and concrete, and a custom-shaped glass wall in the training room mimics angled patterns throughout the office.
While the office opened in May 2020 in the middle of California’s shelter-at-home order, the flexible, adaptable design offers team members choices in how they use the space—whether remotely or on-site.Portfolio
