Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, Green Roof and Gardens

Restorative Refuge

The campus design represents an integrated, sustainable landscape approach. HGA established an interconnected water management, ecological reclamation, and human health design framework. The outcome aligns site design strategies with sustainable landscape management practices to truly renew and elevate the direct connection between a healthy environment and human health.

Several courtyards, gardens, and other green spaces near the building offer visual and physical respite for patients, visitors, and employees. A rooftop garden lifts the healing benefits of nature to the upper levels of the hospital. Combinations of ponds, rain gardens, rolling hills covered with trees, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials promote mental restoration. Meandering paths, a circuit training course, and seating hierarchy encourage social interaction and physical activity. The aggregate of these site features unifies and enriches the restorative qualities of the Campus.
