Primary Care Institute

Lean & Flexible Work Space

HGA worked with Northwestern Medicine to fit-out four floors of the downtown Chicago location for primary care clinics with embedded specialties. Two of the main goals for the project included maximizing exterior views and natural light, while also providing a Lean and flexible work space for staff. HGA completed a Lean process that included observations, interviews with staff and providers, and studies of the current state of their workflow and operations to design around eliminating waste and improving efficiencies detailed to their needs. Specific requests included maximizing patient care space
and convenience to lab functions.

The primary care group is comprised of several newly integrated physician groups, with each group choosing their key design goals to inform how their unique space would work. These goals were translated into accommodations for diverse work styles and flexibility, with floor layouts designed to facilitate several types of provider officing and staff work areas for varying levels of collaboration.
