National Electrical Manufacturers Association Headquarters

Turning the Spotlight onto Electrical Manufacturing

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association’s new headquarters transforms the often-invisible electrical infrastructure that powers modern life into bold architectural features. HGA’s design elevates member-manufactured products from hidden components to celebrated focal points, creating a sophisticated workplace that honors the organization’s centennial legacy while positioning it for the next era of electrification.

HGA’s project delivery pioneered an unprecedented manufacturer-direct specification model that bypassed traditional processes. Working directly with NEMA’s member companies, the design team coordinated 100% donated electrical components, from lighting and cable trays to conduit and back boxes. This innovative approach required developing new workflows and documentation systems to manage the complexity of the custom installations. The team coordinated with three light manufacturers to maintain a unified design, while construction management partners embedded a dedicated electrical contractor to track, receive, and deliver products directly to site, circumventing traditional distribution channels.

HGA’s design transforms utilitarian electrical elements into refined architectural features throughout the workspace. Industrial cable trays become floating shelves with warm wood inlays, exposed conduit creates rhythmic visual texture, and electrical back boxes are reimagined as overhead cabinetry. Custom 3D-printed luminaires showcase cutting-edge LED technology, while wire spools wrapped in copper serve as occasional tables that subtly reference electrical conduction.

Custom environmental graphics and an RGB gradient sign reinforce brand identity while celebrating innovation. These industrial elements contrast beautifully with the sophisticated palette of warm wood, clear glass, and tailored furnishings strategically balancing transparency and warmth while representing the diverse membership. The result demonstrates how member products work harmoniously to create a sustainable, dynamic environment that immediately highlights NEMA’s role in the electrical industry inspiring the possibilities of electrification.
