A Showroom within the Office
In 2019, Mortenson’s DC Metro Area headquarters was relocated to Tysons Corner, Virginia. As part of change management, they hired HGA to evaluate the needs for a more collaborative environment and to understand Mortenson’s forward approach in the construction industry.
Upon discovery that the selected site was once a retail space, HGA recommended that Mortenson expose the existing ceilings to reveal the full slab-to-slab height (15’0”). This decision not only opens up the office space, but fully expresses the building’s architecture and its floor-to-ceiling exterior first floor windows.
Mortenson wanted to feature their work throughout the space, with actual craftmanship and materials rather than portfolio imagery. The space planning focused on 3 specific areas: an urban, minimalist “client center” with 15-foot glass conference rooms, an “employee hub” with a large communal pantry/café using warm and natural materials, and an outward-facing “work zone” with glass walls and low partitions.
In homage to the company’s midwestern roots, the space has a focus on natural materials. The resulting design is a work environment that clients and partners can visit and collaborate while viewing Mortenson’s work on display.Portfolio
