Collaboration and Innovation to be “the Best Builder in America”
For McCarthy’s new Roseville, CA office, HGA assisted in both finding the right space and laying it out. The site selection team looked at possible locations, and considered the surrounding neighborhoods in terms of nearby fitness centers, restaurants and even the orientation of the sun.
The next step after that was understanding what their goals were, listening and discussing what was best for them. Previously, McCarthy organized employees into groups, like operations or pre-construction. In the new layout, employees are in larger groups that represent different facets of a project to help open up communication. The new layout, in an “L” shape, was designed with an open, collaborative feel. Walls feature whiteboards, allowing people to jot down ideas and concepts, stimulating discussion and collaboration. The office balances that with some traditional functions. There are still offices for heads-down work and private discussions, but the collaborative spaces serve not only internal discussions but also meetings with clients.
McCarthy employees were involved in the planning and design of the new office, which helped staff embrace the changes to the office layout and style of working.
