Martis Camp Residence
High-Efficiency Rustic Retreat
The surrounding mountains and woods inspired the Martis Camp’s material palette and unobtrusive silhouette, designed in harmony with the wooded mountain setting. The beautiful setting required optimizing expansive views as part of this home.
Rather than opting for a single, imposing structure, the project was envisioned as a collection of smaller buildings strategically nestled into the hillside, an approach chosen to avoid the visual dominance of a large singular structure. The house is distinctly modern in form, detail, and use of materials. Steel, wood, and board-formed concrete create a contemporary backdrop for the design’s focal point: large expanses of glass to maximize views and natural light.
The building’s design prioritizes year-round comfort, incorporating radiant heating to keep residents warm during snowy Sierras winters while maintaining a harmonious connection with its picturesque surroundings.
