Maine Medical Center - Research Institute

Translational Research From Bedside To Bench

These two research entities are engaged in translational research that brings discoveries from the bedside to the bench and vice-versa, with a focus on cardiovascular disease, cancer medicine, transplantation, regenerative medicine, and skeletal disease. This two-way collaboration between clinical observation and basic research is intended to speed the discovery of new drugs and treatments for human disease.

The addition houses 11 new principal investigators in an effort to attain sustainability, and to support the evolving translational research efforts. The expansion includes additional established and funded investigators who are engaged in translational (or highly translatable) research, and work closely with basic scientists at MMCRI in areas that relate well to MMC’s strategically important clinical programs.

The design of the facility creates a new courtyard ringed with investigators offices and laboratory spaces. The office zone is flanked by a large generic open lab and customized alcoves for specific research instrumentation and equipment. Clinical sciences are supported by a patient infusion room, examination rooms and a nourishment center for ambulatory clinical subjects.
