Fairfax County, VA | Monument Drive Parking and Commuter Transit Center

A Neighborly Transit Hub

Longtime client Fairfax County has a commitment to design excellence and sustainability. We are privileged to be leading the design of their first GBCI ParkSmart parking garage. Product of the county master plan, this innovative multi-modal facility is the first to accommodate a ground floor “Slug” ride share transfer station and supports eight levels of parking (820 spaces) topped by full photo voltaic array. A single-story, tensile fabric pavilion covers an eight-bay bus terminal. Countering the client’s preconception of an in-building, ground-level bus terminal, the team introduced cost savings, clarity to site circulation, and enhanced user safety with the now segregated bus terminal pavilion. Building and landscape are in motion.

Designed as a good neighbor, cues have been taken from surrounding context in scale, color, and texture. Scale has been muted by a cleaver grouping of façade elements. The bus canopy is an artful composition of triangular frame supports bound with tensile fabric. The steel triangular composition culminates in a glass stair elevator tower structure resulting in the keystone culmination for the development. This project was funded from federal sources through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Locally Administered Projects (LAP) program.
