East Los Angeles College, Math & Science Complex
Elevating a learning community’s commitment to the future
East Los Angeles College is a school in an urban setting with a campus of mostly single-story stucco and wood-frame buildings. When the college decided to expand and enhance its math and science offerings, HGA was hired to create an overall masterplan, giving an architectural focus to this academic core. The 118,000-square-foot Math and Science complex includes a new building for Life Sciences, Chemistry and Math, as well as two renovated buildings for Physics and Earth Sciences surrounding a landscaped plaza.
As the centerpiece, the three-story Math and Sciences building consists of two academic wings connected by a glass-walled circulation core. An articulated façade features brick on the ground level with zinc panels and plaster on the upper floors. Special features include a “success center,” where math students will gain one-on-one tutoring in a computer lab/study area, and a “mock-patient” room for Life Science students.
Sustainable design innovations include day lighting, renewable-energy sources and recycled materials to meet LEED® Silver certification. The central plaza between the buildings maximizes green space, provides a gathering space for math and science students and connects them to the main academic campusPortfolio
