Department of Veterans Affairs, Togus Trigeneration Plant

Minimizing Carbon Footprint While Supplying Clean Energy

Providing steam, electricity and chilled water, the Trigeneration Plant reduces operating costs by approximately $1 million and carbon emissions by approximately 8,600 Metric Tons annually utilizing wood chips as the plant’s primary fuel source.

Teaming with DeMaria Building Company in a design-build process, HGA developed a competitive strategy to meet the hospital’s electricity, thermal, and cooling load requirements. The plant features a material handling system, including a fuel storage building and new boiler house that shares a wall with an existing building to allow staff to move freely between the existing operation and the new equipment.
