Cornell University Rowing Center

Propelling Cornell's Rowing Program

Cornell University broke ground in May 2010 on a redevelopment and expansion of their rowing facilities on the Lake Cayuga Inlet. HGA analyzed the existing facilities, which had last been expanded when Women’s Rowing was established in the 1970s, with the goal of finding the best method of providing the entire program needed by the more than 150 athletes on the Men’s Heavyweight, Men’s Lightweight and Women’s Openweight teams.

Our solution was to repurpose the aging facilities and leverage their close relationship with the waterfront while adding on strategically to provide new facilities and create a harmonious “village” of buildings that are clearly identified as Cornell Rowing.

The 31,500 SF Rowing Center proved to be a winner on all counts – within the budget of the Athletic Department, able to renew the existing investment on the site, and able to provide training, boat storage and team support functions that are safe, encourage effective training, satisfy Title IX goals and provide an outstanding environment for recruiting and alumni events.
