Elevating Patient Experience While
Driving Efficiency

HGA partnered with CentraCare to unite a hospital and a clinic on one singular campus to drive operational efficiencies and create a new brand identity. As part of our design approach, we led community engagement sessions that both informed all aspects of design and the reimagining of their brand. By guiding the client through the selection of the site and innovative healthcare space planning with experiential design and interior materiality we provided a holistic approach that laid the foundation for a successful project.

The design team supported the client’s goal of reinventing healthcare by elevating design and the patient experience in the clinical environment while also considering durability and cleanability. Starting with the design of department desks and nurse stations, consistent forms, integrated lighting, and rich materiality allow for a cohesive patient experience from the first impression all the way into the patient room. Meeting the goal of improving wayfinding led to a key driver in the design – having no wrong answer when navigating the space. The arching wood wall of the “Main Street” draws on the local Redwood Falls and cascades down to the ground. The feature wall showcases strategically detailed recesses encompassing department entries featuring signage and branding through wall graphics. The design team used a universal platform for the clinical spaces to right-size the departments and provide opportunities for the surgery and emergency room to flex based on need and the demand throughout the day driving higher utilization. In the clinic a combination of on- and off-stage space and standardized same handed exam rooms provide flexibility for the staff and opportunities for collaboration outside of the patient per view. The use of pre-fabricated walls for the exam rooms, rehab treatment, and inpatient rooms, reduced the cost and the construction schedule and also provides adaptable space to the changing needs of the future.
