B.H. Whipple Federal Building, Campus Renovation
Secure Landscape
The revitalized B.H. Whipple Federal campus tells the story of the site’s unique environmental context while integrating security and artful design with functional and graceful landscape features.
Renovation of the building required extensive research of federal security requirements. By distilling these requirements to their basic dimensions, the design team created a vocabulary of design elements that allowed security features to be transformed into attractive earthworks, without the use of fences or walls. Instead, constructed security walls recall the neighboring bluffs of the Mississippi River, creating an attractive sculptural feature that also protects the campus.
