1951 Harbor Bay Parkway
Headquarters with a View
Exelixis wanted a new, inspiring headquarters at 1951 Harbor Bay Parkway, one that could accommodate its rapid growth and provide a conducive environment for scientists to focus on their work.
In collaboration with the SRMErnst and Exelixis teams, a metrics-based design approach was put forth that factored in views, natural light, cost (floor-to-skin ratio) and parking. Presenting each scenario objectively allowed the client to make informed decisions that fit their desired program. Ultimately, the clients chose a 220,000 SF building with four floors and a 55,000 SF floor plate oriented along Harbor Bay Parkway.
Designed with efficient glazing and shading, this all-electric building offsets carbon with the purchase of renewable energy. Taking advantage of natural light on the north and east facades highlights the site’s sweeping bay views while mitigating heat gain for the building’s west-facing main façade. The design team also worked closely with contractors, consultants, and vendors to develop a high-performance GFRC panel and window system.
The interior layout favors 65% private offices, placing open workspace at the window edge.
The new headquarters also features all-hands gathering areas and zoned break stations throughout the building. Completed in 2023, the building is anticipated to achieve LEED® certification and meet the WELL Building Standard.
