Newly Remodeled Aon Center Plaza Opens to the Public

HGA’s landscape design transforms the outdoor plaza.

HGA is honored to take part in the dramatic transformation of the outdoor plaza of one of Chicago’s iconic buildings—the East Loop skyscraper Aon Center—with 601W, The Telos Group, BEAR Construction and JLL. HGA celebrated at the grand opening ceremony on Sept. 23, with speakers from all parties involved.

Built in 1972 by famed architect Edward Durell Stone, Aon Center has been a focal point of Chicago’s skyline and the East Loop area for nearly 50 years. Over the last nine months the building’s public outdoor plaza has undergone an exciting renovation and now offers tenants, downtown workers and the public alike an expansive welcoming space to relax, recharge and reconnect with each other, and nature, in the heart of the city.

“The new sloping lawn blurs the line between public and private realms, offering opportunities for work and social gatherings, café seating, and after-hours lounging in an inviting, park-like environment,” said Brit Erenler, landscape architect with HGA. “The plantings throughout the plaza will change and grow, providing visual interest during the four seasons we experience in the Midwest, as well as hiding the complex infrastructure underneath.”

The much beloved sound sculptures by artist Harry Bertoia have been brought back to the plaza and now have permanent pride of place for the visual and audible enjoyment of plaza visitors. Stay tuned to learn more about HGA’s work on the new Aon Center Plaza.
