Minnesota Zoological Gardens – Weesner Family Amphitheater Selected for AIA Minnesota 25-Year Award

Minnesota Zoological Gardens - Weesner Family Amphitheater

The HGA-designed Minnesota Zoological Gardens – Weesner Family Amphitheater received the 25-Year Award by AIA Minnesota. The Award recognizes one exemplary architectural project that stands the test of time each year.

Guided by the Minnesota Zoological Garden’s mission “to connect people, animals, and the natural world to save wildlife,” HGA programmed and designed the amphitheater in 1989, the amphitheater is incredibly adaptable and heavily used by the public. Perched on the edge of the Minnesota Zoo’s largest lake, the limestone amphitheater sweeps along the brow of a hillside oak knoll and overlooks a managed wetland and pond. A combination of soaring tensile canopies and nestled seating for 1,500, it evokes an ancient amphitheater feel and inspires a sense of bonding with the living earth. Standing the test of time, the amphitheater is a strong example of biophilic design and demonstrates the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. Partners included Arkay Construction, Kvernstoen, and Kehl and Associates. The HGA team will receive the award at the AIA Minnesota Awards Celebration on Friday, December 2, 2022.
