Tracy Randall explores four trends in healthcare furniture in Medical Construction & Design’s July/August 2021 issue.

There are many factors influencing the direction of healthcare furniture. The pandemic has impacted how we look at healthcare spaces and has brought a greater awareness to the products we specify. With the current health climate, patients, staff, and visitors may have more anxiety and stress. It is important that a healthcare facility convey a high level of care, with an emphasis on safety, comfort, and hope. Healthcare designers can address this through design elements that help reduce stress, which in turn promotes healing and wellbeing.
The pandemic has accelerated many emerging trends in healthcare furniture, while adding relevancy to newer trends. Furniture will need to be even more durable and cleanable but also inviting, providing comfort and a homelike aesthetic. With the past year of social distancing and self-isolation, designers will need to have a renewed focus on wellness and recreate a human-centered environment.
