HGA Happenings: November 2022

As 2022 races to a close, our hard at work teams, partners, and clients continue to celebrate project milestones. Here’s a quick look at recent new projects, groundbreakings, and newly photographed work.

New Projects

Building X
UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California

HGA has been selected to complete a detailed project program study for Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center’s 4th Floor Patient Care Reconfiguration. The project will maximize inpatient beds and patient support functions when the existing inpatient neuropsychiatric units are converted to acute care medical/surgical units. The additional beds will help to alleviate the center’s capacity constraints. HGA will work with the University to develop program requirements and maximize re-use of existing facilities. Planning will include managing construction while maintaining continuous hospital operations. The project will pursue a ‘reach target’ of LEED Gold.

HGA recently completed design of CenterPark, a prominent research campus in San Diego where Life Sciences companies can flourish. Partnering with Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects and Longfellow Real Estate Partners, a leading Life Sciences real estate development group, the project will update a 17-acre campus masterplan and will include a new 200,000 square-foot ground-up building and a 200,000 square-foot multi-phased renovation to nine one- and two-story buildings. CenterPark is registered for LEED Gold certification and will feature Fitwel certified shared amenities, including a gym, café, conference facilities, ample outdoor spaces, and bicycle facilities.

Groundbreakings

Construction has begun on the HGA-designed University of Delaware Building X, a interdisciplinary science building that reimagines the modern science laboratory. Expected to be completed in 2024, Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is constructing the new science center, which will bring together biology, psychology, neuroscience, physics and quantum science and accelerate research in disease, developmental disorders, neuroscience and human behavior. The facility will include research and teaching labs, faculty offices and student workspaces, and conference rooms. Comparable to LEED silver certification, the science center is designed to meet the City of Newark’s construction standard for sustainability.

Impact Justice, Oakland, California
Impact Justice, Oakland, California

HGA has worked with Impact Justice, a not-for-profit innovation and research center, since their founding in 2015. The organization experienced growth and purchased their own building, where they could lease affordable workspace to other non-profits. HGA worked with the organization to transform a four-story, mid-century building in the Cleveland Heights neighborhood of Oakland into a clean and modern space that also reflects the humble nature of not-for-profit work. HGA used creative ways to meet budget constraints, such as choosing used furniture and budget-friendly materials and being mindful of the floor’s layout to maximize the space and create flexibility for future growth.

With images now available, we’re excited to share ThedaCare Orthopedic, Spine, and Pain Center. HGA was challenged to expand services on campus with a new center of excellence consolidating Surgery, Rehab, Clinic and inpatient services into one location. The team created a common design language to enhance campus continuity and to speak to a human-centered experience. The design focused on improving ease of work and flow for patients within the facility.  Intuitive wayfinding enhances the patient journey through amenities such as dedicated drop-offs, discharges and glassy public corridors bringing ease within these memorable experiences.

As part of Norman Regional’s transformative Inspire Health plan, the recently photographed 48,000 square-foot Norman Regional Nine is a new freestanding emergency department plus clinic that offers convenient local access to needed primary and emergency healthcare offerings in southeast Norman. HGA provided a consistent patient experience to the one at the main campus, while supporting efficient operations and increased physician and staff satisfaction. In addition to best practice planning, the design reflects Norman Regional’s brand and evidence-based design, giving the facility its own feel and showcasing the natural materials and colors of Oklahoma.
