HGA Happenings: February 2025

In February, HGA celebrated innovative new research facilities, shaping the future of science and patient care. From a cutting-edge medical research center driving breakthroughs in healthcare to a sustainable life sciences campus facilitating innovative biotechnology research, our team has designed spaces that foster discovery and innovation. We are honored to have received two Touchstone Awards for excellence in healthcare design. Explore these groundbreaking projects and more here:

Completed Projects

Lobby and entryway of Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

HGA partnered with Broad Institute and BXP to redevelop 300 Binney Street into a state-of-the-art research facility, expanding the Broad Institute’s presence in the Kendall Square neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Serving as a catalyst for breakthroughs in biomedical science, the approximately 225,000-square-foot building features column-free, open laboratory spaces with stiffened floors that meet high-performance vibration criteria, ensuring precision for cutting-edge research. Terracotta panels and baguette screening frame expansive glass elements, including a striking double-height entry vestibule, while open stair connections and interior glazing enhance visual and physical connectivity. The buildings sculpted mechanical penthouse blends into its curved architectural form, while exterior terraces on levels three and six provide inviting outdoor spaces. Seamlessly integrating advanced research infrastructure with a dynamic, collaborative environment, the new facility is purpose-built to support world-class scientific discovery. Learn more here.

New Project

HGA rendering of Sutter ASC in Santa Clara, California.

HGA has been selected to design two new flagship locations for Sutter Health in Santa Clara, California. The new campuses are part of a larger initiative to open 27 new ambulatory surgery centers in Northern California by 2027 and will fill a growing need in the Silicon Valley where patients endure long waits to see a provider. Located less than a mile apart, the new campuses will offer a broad spectrum of services including integrated, multi-specialty services along with imaging services, cancer services, sports medicine and an orthopedic ambulatory surgery center at the West campus and comprehensive primary care along with specialty care services, an ambulatory surgery center, imaging services, regional lab and an urgent care center at the East campus. HGA is partnering with Sutter Health in a holistic design process incorporating an approachable scale, natural elements, and an abundance of daylighting on the campuses, to create a calming and welcoming patient environment. Part of an Integrated Project Delivery with DPR Construction, the first phase of the project is expected to be complete in 2025. Learn more here

Project Milestones

HGA rendering of Cell Signaling Technology in Manchester-by-the-Sea Massachusetts.

Work is advancing on the Cell Signaling Technology (CST) campus in Manchester-by-the-Sea Massachusetts. Located 45 minutes north of Boston, the 19-acre former granite quarry is being transformed into a cutting-edge, sustainable research campus for CST, a global leader in life sciences discovery technology and custom antibodies. Drilling is officially underway for the installation of an on-site geothermal well field that will provide renewable heating, cooling, and hot water for the HGA-designed net-zero ready campus. This innovative project not only advances scientific discovery but also revitalizes an environmentally degraded site, setting a new benchmark for responsible development. The start of geothermal well construction marks a major milestone in bringing this forward-thinking vision to life. City of Madison, Wisconsin aerial view.

Since 2017, HGA has partnered with the City of Madison in their goal to achieve 100% renewable energy and net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Starting with a comprehensive energy plan, HGA outlined key strategies, including electrifying city buses and fleet vehicles while transitioning to clean energy. Next, the City plans to convert Monona Terrace, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed building, to geothermal energy, removing it from the Capitol Heat and Power Plant’s steam network. HGA’s engineering team is leading a feasibility study to evaluate various geothermal technologies for the building, from conventional geothermal, to a lake-based heat exchanger. Awards

CentraCare Redwood Hospital in Redwood Falls, Minnesota.

HGA has won two Platinum Level Touchstone Awards for Bellin Health Surgery & Specialty Center and CentraCare Redwood Hospital. Sponsored by the Center for Health Design, the awards recognize the use of evidence-based design to improve clinical and operational outcomes. Bellin Health’s new Ambulatory Surgery & Specialty Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is a right-sized facility that integrates imaging, lab services, and operating rooms. HGA applied Lean methodology and research-driven design to enhance the patient experience and continuum of care. CentraCare Redwood Hospital in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, consolidates a hospital and clinic into a single campus, boosting operational efficiency and creating a new brand identity. HGA’s community engagement sessions and pre- and post-occupancy evaluations informed future planning.
