HGA Happenings: August 2024

In August, an HGA-designed clinic became the largest WELL certified healthcare facility in the United States and the first WELL certified healthcare facility in Wisconsin. In California’s Central Valley, the design for a new cancer center and surgical care center is underway and in San Diego, a technology sandbox, set to drive innovation in emerging scientific fields, opened its doors. Read on for more project updates across the firm.

Completed Project

Lab space within the Technology Sandbox at UC San Diego.

HGA’s team attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla. Located in historic Bonner Hall, the HGA-designed facility offers access to advanced equipment and expertise. The Sandbox supports life sciences and biomedical research, fosters industry collaborations, and accelerates technological advances through cutting-edge instrumentation and expanded experimental capabilities. The central hub offers state-of-the-art tools like next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), enabling groundbreaking research in neuroscience, plant biology, bacterial cell biology, and CRISPR technology. The renovation of Bonner Hall creates a collaborative space for students, researchers, and faculty, with a design optimized for coastal conditions, lab safety, and environmental controls. Project Milestone

Drone view of the Resources Building's new, exterior façade.

HGA took part in a celebration commemorating the completion of the exterior façade for the State of California Resources Building in downtown Sacramento. A progressive design-build partnership with AC Martin, Turner Construction and HGA, the project includes a complete renovation of the 17-story building intended to prioritize energy efficiency and enhance the health and wellness of State employees. HGA brought expertise in workplace strategy, programming, change management, and interior design to the project team, beginning with the creation of a flexible, standardized floor plan to be utilized throughout the building, providing consistency while also accommodating the needs of each agency. In order to maximize space and functionality, amenities like food service, coffee points, storage, training and collaboration spaces, conference rooms, bike storage, and fitness rooms were strategically placed throughout the building, to allow for sharing across agencies. The project goal is to achieve Zero Net Energy and LEED certification. Learn more here

Project Certification

SSM Health Dean Medical Group's South Madison Clinic.

SSM Health Dean Medical Group’s South Madison Campus has been awarded WELL v2 Pilot GOLD Certification. As the largest WELL certified healthcare facility in the United States and the first WELL certified healthcare facility in Wisconsin, this achievement demonstrates SSM Health Dean Medical Group’s commitment to patient and employee health and well-being. Designed by HGA, the Specialty Services Clinic brings over 18 previously dispersed services to the healthcare system’s newest flagship location including consolidated oncology, orthopedics, therapy, and women’s services. The WELL certification process includes ten areas of focus including: air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind, and community. Highlights of the Specialty Services Clinic include views of surrounding nature, access to daylight in patient and staff spaces, places for respite, and material selections to ensure indoor air quality. New Projects

HGA rendering of the Northern Virginia Science Center.

The new Northern Virginia Science Center in Sterling, Virginia will be a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient center, redefining sustainability with a climate-friendly approach. The STEM-based platform will offer interactive exhibits in five galleries: Flow, Helios, Human, Habitat, and the Wonder Gallery focused on the youngest guests. Working with Roto as the owner’s exhibit designer, HGA planned and designed the museum to create a guest-centered building, accessible for all. Key sustainability features include strategic building placement to maximize natural light, low-carbon materials, and a design that minimizes waste. The use of reinforced geomesh, which supports plant growth and vehicle access, replaces traditional asphalt. Scheduled to begin construction soon, hear more about the Science Center in this interview with HGA’s Laura Henderson and Amanda Clements, and NovaSci’s Executive Director, Nene Spivy, here.

HGA conceptual rendering of new Sutter Health cancer and surgical care center.

Sutter Health, in partnership with Gould Medical Group, has chosen HGA to design a new comprehensive cancer and surgical care center in Modesto, California, addressing the growing need for specialty care in the Central Valley. The four-story facility will feature the Cancer Center on the first two floors, an ambulatory surgery center on the third, and an outpatient clinic on the fourth floor. The Cancer Center will offer a wide range of services, including clinic visits, infusion and radiation therapy, imaging, lab, pharmacy, and complementary therapies, as well as access to clinical trials and connections to Sutter specialists in San Francisco and Sacramento. The outpatient clinic will offer 50 exam rooms and 25 clinicians, significantly expanding access to care in the region. HGA will contribute its extensive experience in cancer center design to the planning, architecture, interior design, and engineering of this facility. This project is a key part of Sutter Health’s commitment to invest in new and enhanced care facilities and services across California. Learn more here
