HGA Happenings: April 2024

In April, HGA continued to be recognized for our innovative work—while we planted seeds for the future. Our impact is growing—from cross-pollinating ideas at the Design Acceleration Lab in Rochester to breaking ground for advanced healthcare facilities in the Midwest. Check out these updates and more happening at HGA, below:

Completed Project

Roger Glass Center for the Arts in Dayton, Ohio.

HGA attended the grand opening celebration for the University of Dayton’s Roger Glass Center for the Arts. The new, HGA-designed facility is strategically designed as a gateway helping to bridge the campus and community, reaching out with two distinct entries and art plazas that welcome the community in. The Center will elevate the arts on campus, offering concerts, dance and theater performances, and visual art exhibits featuring students, faculty, visiting artists and community members. Hosting a variety of art forms, the Center includes a 386-seat concert hall, a 244-seat experimental theatre and dance performance space, an art gallery, and a new home for the University’s Department of Communications including a newsroom and radio and TV studios, with editing and production suites. Project Milestones

HGA team and partners at Froedtert ThedaCare Health's Oshkosh campus groundbreaking.

HGA attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Froedtert ThedaCare Health’s new health campus in Oshkosh. When complete, the new, smaller scale hospital will include emergency care, inpatient beds, CT scans, x-ray, ultrasound, mammogram, MRI, and lab services. The campus will also include a pharmacy, ambulatory surgery center, and a medical office building housing primary care and specialty services. Located in an area undergoing community redevelopment, the new campus will bring more conveniently located care to Oshkosh residents who live east of Interstate 41, currently more than 15 minutes away from a hospital. HGA designed the new center to reflect the character of both health systems resulting in a timeless building expression inspired by the vernacular of the historic downtown. The design incorporates masonry and wood, with nature-inspired accents and textures that draw inspiration from the reflective waters of the nearby Lake Winnebago. Read the full story here.

Rendering of the UK Cancer Center and Advanced Ambulatory Center.

A team from HGA was onsite in Lexington as the University of Kentucky broke ground on the new UK Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building. The 550,000-square-foot facility will become the new home to the UK Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as a Comprehensive Spine Center, ambulatory surgery space, and other outpatient services. HGA designed the building with Champlin Architecture as the Architect of Record. The planning and design process played a pivotal role in transforming the site into a prominent gateway, offering a clear ambulatory component that welcomes patients and establishes a singular identity, flexible enough to work on various scales. Events

Aerial view of Forest Edge Elementary School in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Forest Edge Elementary in the Oregon School District has been awarded a 2024 ASHRAE Technology Award in the Exemplary Decarbonization category. HGA partnered with Bray Architects and Findorff on the first net zero school in Wisconsin. The school offsets 100 percent of its on-site energy needs through a process of decarbonization. The all-electric facility utilizes state-of-the-art technologies including microgrid battery storage, a solar photovoltaic system, a green roof, and a geothermal heating and cooling system. A representative from the District attended the first White House Summit for Sustainable School Buildings and Grounds on April 26, centered on the need for sustainable school infrastructure and the impact that school conditions have on health and learning outcomes. Watch a recording of the Summit here.

HGA's Design Acceleration Lab in Rochester, Minnesota.

HGA’s design and engineering team took part in this year’s ASHE Region 6 Conference, with four team members speaking at the event on transforming healthcare delivery, including examples from the recently completed modular prefabricated project at M Health Fairview’s St. John’s Hospital. Following the event, HGA invited industry partners into the new Design Acceleration Lab. Located below HGA’s downtown Rochester office, the Lab highlights new design research, technologies, and solutions through programming and interactive displays. The Lab will host a TEDxMinneapolis, The Brave and the Brilliant” event in May. Learn more about HGA’s Design Acceleration Lab here.
