The pandemic has reinforced the importance of designing for patient and staff safety in hospitals. Airborne infection, in particular, is one of the biggest issues impacting safety. To meet the challenges posed over the past few years, HGA has responded to issues related to air quality, air cleanliness, air changes, and UV lighting to reduce airborne bacteria—all essential to maintaining the health and wellbeing of occupants.

While COVID-19 is receding from the headlines, the next unknown pandemic may be on the horizon.

We don’t know what the next one is, so we are trying to make sure we are accommodating it without significantly increasing the cost of building hospitals,” said Leigh Harrison, PE, LEED AP, Principal with HGA, who noted that hospitals are among the most expensive buildings to create.

In the above video, Harrison explains how our engineers and architects are setting healthcare industry standards designing for healthy indoor air quality and infection control—with innovations at UPMC in Pittsburgh among several new hospitals pointing toward the future.
