The post-pandemic emphasis on healthy environments -especially shared spaces- is here to stay. In the age of digital technology, the importance of circadian lighting has grown as an important factor in today’s workplace.

Best practices for the application of circadian lighting however, are still not well documented. There is currently no tool to measure how much circadian lighting an individual receives throughout the day, or at what times. Additionally, work pattern changes after the pandemic have raised questions on how to apply circadian lighting effectively, to promote health and well-being for in-person and distant workplace situations.

This micro-grant focuses on two aspects of circadian lighting studies for workplace: First, exploring the possibility of measuring circadian lighting at the individual level via a wearable device or app, similar to measuring walking steps. This report evaluates the current state of circadian lighting practice and identify potential project partnerships for a phased research funding.

Second, the research explores innovative ideas on how to meet the circadian lighting requirements with minimal energy usage. The study also includes the creation of accessible daylight and artificial light to meet individual needs, based upon schedules and locations throughout the day. This research helps to develop design guidelines for HGA best practices and showcases the firm’s lead in this field of expertise.
