Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s Wins International IIDA Healthcare Design Award

HGA is honored to announce that our design of Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s has been named a winner of the 2023 International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Healthcare Design Awards in the Hospital Pediatric category.

These awards recognize firms for creativity and innovation in the design of healthcare facilities across seven categories within Ambulatory, Extended Care and Assisted Living Facilities, and Hospitals.

It’s awe-inspiring to see designers like these bridging their creative visions with the care and composition of patients, functional needs of facilities administrators, and the communities they must serve from now and into the future,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA.

Guerin Children’s at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles advances an ambitious vision for the future of children’s healthcare where each patient’s holistic experience is viewed as an important aspect of care, critical to their healing outcomes. Completed in 2022, the new pediatric unit includes advanced clinical care, pediatric research, and physician education and training.

The design is aspirational for patients, families and staff and will be a catalyst for growing Guerin Children’s into the vision we’ve established,” said Sean Collins, AIA, LEED AP, Executive Director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction at Cedars-Sinai.

Every aspect of the design of Guerin Children’s is meant to immerse patients and their families into a new world of care by providing portals of engagement for escape and respite that promote healing.  The new pediatric destination transports visitors to another world through the use of technology, play and color, all while maintaining the advanced level of care for which the medical center is known. The incorporation of biophilia and a fantastical themed outdoor healing garden where hospital beds can be accommodated balances the technology and gives every patient an opportunity to experience nature.

The design meets Cedars-Sinai’s desire for all the campus to be sophisticated, modern and timeless while whimsical and engaging for this patient population. Finishes, furniture, colors, and artwork were chosen to address the needs of diverse age ranges, from young children to teens, and adult visitors. Patient and family amenities include a playroom, game room, family reception and waiting area with interactive screen, private patient rooms, and outdoor healing garden.

Through the design of this space, HGA established a precedent for the design of future pediatric spaces at Guerin Children’s, closely aligned with Cedars-Sinai’s core values and in support of care teams delivering the best possible health outcomes.

HGA previously won the IIDA Healthcare Design Award for Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center (2022) in Ohio, St. Elizabeth Healthcare Cancer Center (2021) in Kentucky, CentraCare Health – Long Prairie (2019) in Minnesota, and the Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation Molecular Imaging Center (2018) at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
