Florida State University - Interdisciplinary Research & Commercialization Building
A Materials Science "Idea Factory"
The Florida State University Interdisciplinary Research & Commercialization Building (IRCB) represents a transformative approach to scientific collaboration, serving as the headquarters for FSU Quantum and advancing the university’s leading-edge quantum research. HGA’s design unites diverse research disciplines under one roof to accelerate breakthrough discoveries. This establishes a new standard for FSU’s Southwest Campus while supporting the university’s ambitious “Path to Top 25” initiative and its goal of hiring 70 to 100 new tenure-track faculty members in science and engineering fields over five years.
Strategically positioned as a gateway to FSU’s Southwest Campus Innovation Park, the IRCB capitalizes on its proximity to 1.5 million net square feet of cutting-edge research facilities, including the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the Applied Superconductivity Center, the Aero-Propulsion Mechatronics & Energy Center, the Center for Advanced Power Systems, the High Performance Materials Institute, and the FAMU/FSU School of Engineering. This location creates unprecedented opportunities for collaboration and resource sharing across multiple research centers.
HGA’s design creates an open, adaptable environment that houses 30 new faculty members across chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and physics within 115,000 square feet of research space. The building features three laboratory floors organized in a carefully planned hierarchy of functional areas that support both independent research and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Cleanroom and imaging facilities anchor the ground floor, providing specialized environmental controls for sensitive research processes, while chemistry, device prototyping, chemical engineering, and biomedical engineering programs occupy the upper levels in a vertical arrangement that facilitates natural interactions between different scientific disciplines.
