Designing Futures: Connecting Students to Careers Through AFH Career Talks
At HGA, we believe design has the power to shape lives—and that the future of our industry depends on inspiring the next generation of creators, problem-solvers, and leaders.
This spring, members of our Boston team participated in AFH Career Talks, an initiative designed to introduce students to professional pathways and real-world experiences. Through personal stories and interactive discussions, we shared the many routes into architecture, engineering, and design, emphasizing that there is no single path to a career in the industry.
Students learned about the design process, from early concepts to completed spaces, and explored how architects, engineers, and designers work together to create meaningful environments. A hands-on programming activity challenged them to think like designers by organizing spaces, considering user needs, and making strategic decisions about how places function.
Equally important was the opportunity for students to connect with professionals from different backgrounds and career stages. These conversations help make the profession more accessible, while reinforcing the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping our built environment.
The Career Talks session is just one part of our ongoing partnership with AFH. This summer, we look forward to welcoming students into our Boston office, where they will experience firsthand how ideas move from concept to reality.
For HGA, initiatives like these are an extension of our practice. By investing in education, mentorship, and exposure, we are helping build a more inclusive and inspired future for the design industry—because design is not just about what we build, but who we inspire along the way.
