Pioneering Research Informs the Design of a Cancer Infusion Center
Cancer continues to be one of the most challenging health conditions today, affecting millions of individuals and their families. For designers it means providing accessible, supportive care spaces. Yet, the effects of cancer center design, particularly infusion centers, on patients, families, and staff remain largely understudied in healthcare design research. To bridge this gap, HGA’s Design Insight Group (DIG) conducted an in-depth pre- and post-occupancy evaluation at St. Elizabeth Cancer Infusion Center in Edgewood, Kentucky. This study explored how the center’s design in the infusion center influences staff efficiency, along with staff and patient satisfaction, by comparing data from before its opening in 2018 to after in 2022.
Characterized by community-focused pods, an efficient on-site pharmacy, and abundant natural light, the center’s infusion center design directly enhances patient comfort and support. The research reveals insights from staff and patients about significant improvements in operational workflows, patient privacy, communication, collaboration, and overall satisfaction, and highlights critical questions about room visits and medication delivery.
