M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital - Observation Unit
Increasing Patient Care Capacity in Ten Months
Since 2022, M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital has experienced a significant rise in inpatient and emergency department visits, which has caused a strain on access to clinical spaced needed by the local community. To solve for the need to meet growing patient demand, they decided to innovate and leverage a speed to market solution STAAT MOD – HGA and Boldt’s innovative prefabricated modular building solution to provide short-term stay and observation beds.
The modular observation unit was designed using evidence-based research and industry best practices. It meets the client’s needs for patient safety and staff efficiency, while supporting healing in beautifully-designed patient and staff spaces with access to natural light. This installation of STAAT MOD is an adaptable, flexible solution that can be repurposed as the hospital’s needs change.
Manufactured to 90% completion in Boldt’s Oshkosh, Wisconsin facility, the unit was then transported to the hospital campus, where the site and foundations had been prepared simultaneously. The unique delivery of the modular observation unit avoided conventional construction disruptions on the already strained campus until the final onsite installation of the new unit, which took place in only three days.
Project initiation through completion was completed in 10 months, half the duration of traditional design and construction process. The new observation unit is the first healthcare facility in the State of Minnesota to be built entirely off site.
