1180 Main
Smart Design on All Sides
A Bay Area commercial real estate developer envisioned something beyond a typical commercial building when they approached 1180 Main. Instead, they saw an opportunity to add to the urban fabric of the neighborhood by connecting and engaging passersby, utilizing the oddly shaped site and its forlorn culvert to advantage by adding landscape elements to create a park as the building’s front door.
At the corner of Maple and Lathrop, a public park follows the curve of the creek and connects to the building via pedestrian bridge. Across the street, a new development may expand and enhance the park, creating a pedestrian hub. Bike lanes, plentiful bike parking, showers and lockers, and easy access to Caltrain makes this project a huge win for commuters.
The building’s design draws inspiration from its surroundings. A blend of industrial concrete and metal, reminiscent of the area’s warehouse heritage, harmoniously combines with warm timber accents and brick, evoking the aesthetics of residential structures. The building has been meticulously designed from all angles, ensuring its visual appeal from every perspective.
A majestic staircase graces the exterior at the northeastern end of Maple Street, adding to the building’s grandeur. Along the CalTrain corridor, a pedestrian pathway has been artfully crafted, featuring an engaging facade that serves as an attractive focal point. The use of insulated glass with wooden slats offers shading during the sunset, adding a cozy touch without obstructing the outdoor view. The building is filled with operable windows and abundant natural light, creating a bright and inviting workplace environment.
To the south, along Elm Street, a café housed within a shipping container adds a welcoming touch to the overall setting, fostering interactions between office workers and residents.
