HGA Happenings: July 2023

Across the nation HGA celebrated a variety of unique projects, including a contemplative memorial site and an interactive floating museum. More exciting projects are on the way with several recent groundbreakings and topping-outs.

Completed Projects

Flowers decorate a Corten steel wall with names of those enslaved at Monticello

HGA and landscape architecture firm, Nelson Byrd Woltz partnered in the design of the recently completed Contemplative Site at Monticello. The memorial serves as a tribute to the 607 enslaved people that labored on Thomas Jefferson’s plantation until 1826. A subtly curved 60-foot-long wall of Corten steel traces a “path of labor” and includes names of the people enslaved, etched into the wall, with spaces left open for additional names as research progresses. The site serves as a connection between the path of labor and the Burial Ground for Enslaved People, final resting place for approximately 40 people who labored at Monticello. Stone benches nearby offer visitors a place to rest under the shade trees, providing a contemplative space to reflect on the realities of slavery at Monticello, the people entangled in it, and its lasting impact on society today. Visitors enter the Senator John Warren Maritime Heritage Center

HGA designed the recently completed Senator John Warner Maritime Heritage Center: Home Port of Tall Ship Providence, a floating museum for the Tall Ship Providence Foundation (TSPF) in Alexandria, Virginia. TSPF’s mission is to educate visitors on the role the Continental Navy played in the American Revolution using Tall Ship Providence as its anchor. HGA led the design of the Maritime Heritage Center, including the architecture and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing elements. Together, Providence and the Maritime Heritage Center will serve as a floating interactive experience, educating visitors and showcasing Alexandria’s history as a port city. Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the sustainable Maritime Heritage Center features a ticket booth, an Education Center, a Naval History Theater, a Gift Shop, and an observation deck. PeopleSpace’s office and showroom in San Jose

HGA partnered with PeopleSpace on the recently completed renovation of their San Jose office and showroom. The workspace solutions company was seeking a space to effectively showcase their products and the latest technology in a setting that reflected their brand. HGA worked with the PeopleSpace team to design a modern, sophisticated, versatile canvas using clean and natural materials, allowing their products to shine. PeopleSpace’s workstation and ancillary furniture are displayed throughout the space, along with their acoustical and lighting fixtures. The showroom brings together the warmth and energy of the company with the aesthetics associated with the San Jose region.  Read more about the project here.

HGA/Hufft rendering of I3R at the University of Arkansas

The Institute for Integrative & Innovative Research (I³R) at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville recently celebrated the topping out of its new building. The celebration marked the placement of the final piece of the mass timber structural framing. The use of mass timber limits the building’s embodied carbon and environmental impact. I³R is designed to serve as a hub between the Institute and the entire campus, with multiple spokes accommodating cross-disciplinary researchers. The facility will support multidisciplinary convergence research that has the potential of solving some of the biggest challenges facing our world today. The I³R will advance research and promote economic development in the region. Designed by HGA in collaboration with Hufft, I3R is being built by CDI Contractors, with completion expected in late 2024. Learn more here.

Construction is underway on “The Hub” at Harley-Davidson’s Headquarters in Milwaukee. “The Hub”, a sunken multi-use event space, will be the heart of the new Davidson Park, expected to open to the public in Spring of 2024. Working with Heatherwick Studio, HGA is the architect of record in addition to providing civil engineering, landscape, lighting, and technology design. The new park will transform a large part of the company’s parking lot into a civic and soulful, green gathering space that can be used by everyone, including employees and the local community. “The Hub” will provide views of the original home of Harley-Davidson in one direction and a lush park in the other direction. There are also plans for a market street, contemplative garden, and nature playground. Read more about the project here.

HGA rendering of Building X at the University of Delaware

The University of Delaware recently celebrated the topping-off of Building X, placing the last structural beam of the four-story structure. Designed to encourage interdisciplinary research and collaboration, the facility will be organized around three themes: mind, brain, and behavior; models and mechanisms of human disease; quantum science and technology. Building X will contribute to research breakthroughs in fields of human disease, developmental disorders, neuroscience and human behavior, and advances in quantum computing. The new facility will feature a bridge connection to the Life Sciences Research Building, as well as landscape improvements to the Main Quad. Designed by HGA and built by Whiting-Turner, Building X will be a hub for scientific research and is expected to open to the public in fall 2024. Learn more here.

HGA and the project team at LA Harbor Southeast Hall groundbreaking

HGA attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Los Angeles Harbor College’s Southeast Hall – the new home to the community college’s award-winning Nursing and Allied Health Science programs. The Hall will also provide dedicated spaces for Equity Programs, Disabled Student Services, and a Student Health Center. Serving as a gateway and public face of the college, the building is located on the far east side of the college’s campus and adjacent to the Science Complex, also designed by HGA in 2013.
