Energetic Coffee House with European Flair

Established in 2016, World Traveler Coffee Roasters is a local, family-owned coffee shop that specializes in providing fresh handcrafted coffee roasted on a weekly basis. World Traveler Coffee is a significant addition to the midtown Sacramento community. Located in a former dentist office, the roaster is well positioned on K Street – one of the city’s most vibrant corridors.

Taking advantage of the prominent location was critical to the project’s success. The existing entrance was tucked within the building core and hidden from the public access. We repositioned the main entrance to face the main street corner and added large glass doors and windows to attract passers-by and gain attention. A patio located on the K Street side of the building is also planned for the future.

For the interior, we knew World Traveler had an international aesthetic they wished to remain consistent with their other locations. The branding strategy was to achieve a sense of European flair while maintaining a consistent palette of minimal whites, wood tones, and rich blue hues and incorporating impactful lighting solutions. A map of the world denotes the many countries from which their coffee beans are sourced. The dominant feature of the space is the geometric ceiling made of horizontal wood slats, which adds a warm, natural element to the shop. Soft under lighting around the bar further accentuates the shop’s “jewel box” quality and seating groups of various sized invites patrons to linger.

During the process, we learned the existing HVAC system and duct work ran center length of the space. The challenge was integrating these systems to be financially feasible while maintaining the integrity of the overall design. The solution is found within the design features of the new ceiling plan, strategically concealing unsightly duct work while maintaining the company’s brand.
